U.S.A. TCODE Report for PICES XII

12 October 2003

In the upcoming year, it is expected that a number of federal and state research programs will initiate date gathering and archiving programs that will be of interest to PICES member nations. On the national scale, the U.S. will be participating in the International Global Ocean Observing System (IGOOS) under the auspices of OCEANS.US. Initiation of a national coastal ocean observing system might begin in the upcoming year. The Alaska Ocean Observing System (AOOS, http://www.aoos.org) will be a part of this system and will establish a marine observing system for the Northeast Pacific. In addition, the North Pacific Marine Board (NPRB, http://www.nprb.org) will be supporting marine observations in the Northeast Pacific and the Gulf Ecosystem Monitoring (GEM, http://www.oilspill.state.ak.us/gem/) program will be supporting observations in the Gulf of Alaska in those regions that were impacted by the 1989 EXXON VALDEZ oil spill.

A data archiving and retrieval system for AOOS, NPRB and GEM is now proposed for development in Alaska. The metadata within this archive will be a subset of the PICES North Pacific Ecosystem Metadatabase.

Work will continue on the PICES North Pacific Ecosystem Metadatabase (http://www.pmel.noaa.gov/np) by Bernard Megrey (NMFS) and Allen Macklin (PMEL). All PICES member nations are asked to contribute new information and updates to this metadata system.

A recent report by the IOOS Data Management and Communications Steering Committee (DMAC) includes a plan for data management and communication that should be of interest to TCODE members (http://dacsc/imp_plan.jsp).
