    Data Type: Mammals; Moose survey data provides population data for the Eastern and western Copper River Delta, Prince William Sound, and Eastern Kenai Peninsula. Aerial surveys were flown in a Piper PA-18 aircraft in late November 1994 - January 1995. moose habitat was searched at 1.4-2.2 minutes per square mile. Sex and age ratio estimates were obtained from data collected prior to mid-December. Total numbers in most populations were estimated based on densities observed during aerial surveys, percentage of wintering habitat surveyed, and quality of survey conditions. When survey conditions were not complete, population estimates were based on historical trends. Purpose of this data is to monitor moose populations on the Chugach National Forest lands and to use moose as an indicator species of diversity and habitat health.

Pacific GIS derived this dataset from 1:250,000 scale, 1990 Census TIGER / line file data. Although this dataset is very detailed, problems in spatial accuracy become apparent at large scales.

    Database: Multi-Resources; The SEA database includes SEA measurements for Prince William Sound studies, historical archives for biological, oceanographic and weather datasets for PWS. Currents are measured by the SEAOCEAN project using an Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP). Advanced Visualization System software is used to allow the user to zoom and navigate interactively through the sound to examine three-dimensional structure of the data. The SEADATA project is using this system to display data collected by multiple SEA groups. Thus allowing distribution of nutrients, plankton, fish and predators to be viewed in relation to one another and to physical conditions such as salinity and current velocity. This system allows users to understand more quickly data from measurements, model simulations and database searches.
