    Data Type: Vegetation/Land Cover/Soils; The Alaska Biological Conservation Database (BCD) is part of a standardized network among all fifty states, five Canadian Provinces, and eleven countries that provide information on population numbers, distribution, geography, ecology, rarity ranking and protection status for rare and sensitive plant and animal species, plant communities, and critical habitats. This database is a relational database management system application that contains many linked databases of which three are separate databases with a spatial component. These databases are the element occurrence database, the site database and the managed area database. Of these three data sets only the Element occurrence database has been automated in ARC/INFO GIS format to date.

Of primary importance are the predictions of soil behavior for selected land uses. Also highlighted are inherent limitations or hazards of the soils for land uses and the impact that selected land uses will have on the environment. Suitability ratings are given for such uses as common crops, rangeland for cattle and sheep and reindeer, commercial forestry, road locations, low buildings, recreation and off-road trafficability.

    Data Type: Vegetation/Land Cover/Soils; Pacific GIS used several different full resolution vegetation datasets organized by 1:250,000 scale USGS quadrangles to cover the Prince William Sound - Copper River ecosystem. The USGS EROS Alaska Field Office developed the Interim Land Cover dataset which is based on Landsat Multispectral Sensor (MSS) satellite imagery with an original resolution of 80 meters. Pacific GIS developed a cross-walk from the interim land cover vegetation types to the closest equivalent vegetation type in the Alaska Vegetation Classification scheme to provide a common classification that can be used across the ecosystem for various sources of vegetation data. This common classification has been added to the original classification information.

    Data Type: Vegetation/Land Cover/Soils; Pacific GIS compiled several different vegetation datasets organized by 1:250,000 scale USGS quadrangles to cover the Prince William Sound - Copper River ecosystem. The Chugach National Forest Timber Type database is a timber oriented vegetation layer based on interpretation of aerial photography. It is the most detailed digital vegetation information available for substantial areas within the greater Prince William Sound ecosystem. The database contains detailed information about timbered areas including species composition, stand density, stocking levels, stand class size, and volume. Many of these timber- oriented descriptions can be useful as surrogates for important ecological variables such as structural information about a given stand. The database also contains less detailed information on non-forest vegetation and cover types.
